Designed by Thomes Brown junior, Architect to the Prison Board of Scotland, and completed in 1848, this unique and imposing Category B Listed building served as a prison until the late 1870s when it was adapted for use as a Police Station by the Wigtownshire Constabulary. It became a private residence in the 1950s.

It incorporates numerous period features:- working shutters, fireplaces, original cell doors, iron bars to some windows and panelled doors. Some rooms have arched ceilings and stone slabs floors - a clue to their cellular origins. Inmates’ graffiti scratched into the white washed cell walls completes the scene.

An extensive programme of renovation and repair has been carried out by the current owner however there is further work to be done, albeit on a lesser scale.
